Menstrual Cup vs. Pads and Tampons (guys you might want to steer clear of this post)

I initially was introduce to a Diva Cup from my mother who had been using it for a few years. (A diva cup is a latex cup that is inserted into the vagina and catches your period and once filled is emptied, cleaned and re-inserted) I gotta say when she first told me about it, I thought it was gross. Doesn't the blood get on your hands? Truth is, sometimes it does. Honestly though, now I don't see it as gross. Ladies, our monthly cycle is what enables us to have the incredible power to give life. It is so much more than gross, it is empowering. That is the literal blood of life right there. Thinking about this has helped me get over feeling squeamish about it at all.

After my mother introduced me to it, I continued to use tampons and pads for a few months, but started to realize how much trash I was creating every month that was non-recyclable and recognizing that the fact that the diva cup was re-usable (you can use it from a year to 10 years depending on the manufacturer) meant I would not be creating any additional waste in a landfill because of my period. I also never liked using either pads or tampons honestly. Pads would eventually feel like diapers to me and I like to lead a pretty active lifestyle and was always worrying about them leaking. Tampons tended to dry me out in there. Hmmm...maybe I should give this diva cup thing a try?

So I did! My verdict is I love it. I don't use anything else now. It's a win win for the happiness of my vajayjay and for the planet. It doesn't dry me out and I also feel more confident about it's leak-proof ability than a pad. On my heavy days I will sometimes wear a panty liner just in case but otherwise I create no added trash on behalf of my monthly cycle which makes me happy. If you have any more questions about what it's like to use one, feel free to leave a comment!
